Crisis Care and Assisted Living Facility: A Respite for Patients and Families

Crisis care, also known as continuous home care, is a professional hospice service for the terminally ill. We can provide it in brief periods or 24/7 to achieve palliation or manage a patient’s uncontrollable symptoms.

Our crisis care services are predominantly nursing care services, hospice aide, and caregiver services. This type of hospice and palliative care maintains the patient’s comfort at home during a pain or symptom crisis. It also offers respite for the patient’s family members by providing assistance from our highly trained staff around the clock.

While we generally recommend crisis care in the patient’s home to ensure the most comfortable and familiar setting, we can also provide continuous care in a skilled nursing facility, assisted living community, or nursing home.

Our team always consults with families to determine the best option for their loved ones. We will do all we can to provide a loving and caring environment for the patient during this difficult time.

Hospice and palliative care for crisis patients is one of the four types of hospice care covered by the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Medicare will pay for a large portion of the costs of crisis care if your loved one meets the following requirements.
  • A general practitioner and hospice doctor assess the patient’s symptoms and certify that they are terminally ill or expected to live six months or less
  • The patient accepts respite care or end-of-life care instead of a curative treatment through a hospital
  • The patient or their representative signs a statement choosing hospice care over other Medicare-covered treatments

As a Medicare-approved inpatient hospice care provider, our staff at Longleaf can offer continuous care for any hospice patient who meets the above qualifications. We will work with you to make sure your loved one receives the best possible continuous home care without the financial burden of out-of-pocket costs.

When to Initiate Crisis/End of Life Care

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations, all hospice patients are eligible for continuous hospice care if they are terminally ill.

When a patient requires continuous care and the patient’s symptoms cause extreme discomfort, we recommend inpatient hospice care. With proper symptom management and professional support, the patient can enjoy pain relief and comfort during the last days of their life.

You can always reach out to our hospice team members if you need a professional assessment. When you partner with us, we will work with you to develop a plan that provides the best possible respite care for your loved one.

Acute Medical Symptoms That May Require Crisis Care

A medical crisis can manifest in different acute symptoms. If your loved one experiences any of the following uncontrolled symptoms, they might need the support of our hospice care team.
  • Bleeding
  • Uncontrollable vomiting or nausea
  • Terminal agitation or restlessness
  • Severe pain
  • Delirium or confusion
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hemorrhaging or excessive blood loss

  • Pressure ulcers, bedsores, and other skin issues
